MANILA (August 24) — The Philippines will offer legal representation to six Filipinos jailed in Hong Kong for allegedly impersonating dentists.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac stated that Filipinos will be given legal representation. The DMW, the Philippine Consulate General, and other Philippine agencies have already provided for their visitation privileges.
The six Filipinos, aged 34 to 60, were arrested on August 17 by the Hong Kong Immigration Department for “breach of condition of stay by taking up unapproved employment and establishing, or joining in business in Hong Kong; and falsely pretending to be a dentist,” according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
They had traveled to Hong Kong to work as domestic helpers, as per their visas and overseas employment certificates (OECs). Their acts may be classified as “unapproved employment” because they are believed to have taken on work outside of their certification.
“Umayon lang po doon sa trabaho na ‘yon. Huwag na pong mag-moonlight o magtrabaho ng ano pa man na labag sa Hong Kong laws and regulations at sa visa na iginawad sa inyo,” Cacdac insisted.
