TALITAY, Maguindanao del Sur (October 29) – Residents from several villages in this town have voluntarily surrendered 12 high-powered firearms in support of the government’s peace and order campaign, the military reported Tuesday, October 28.
The surrendered weapons included sniper rifles, grenade launchers, and assault rifles, formally received by Brig. Gen. Edgar Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade.
“The voluntary surrender of firearms in Talitay reflects our citizens’ trust in the rule of law and the government,” Catu said, adding that the brigade continues to work with local officials and police to curb illegal gun possession.
Maj. Gen. Donald Gumiran, commander of the Western Mindanao Command, lauded the local government and security forces for the successful Balik Baril ceremony, saying it demonstrates unity and the community’s commitment to peace.
“By surrendering loose firearms, we are gradually eradicating fear and violence in the region,” Gumiran said. “We encourage everyone to trust the government and help build a peaceful and prosperous Bangsamoro.”
The initiative forms part of the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) program, which promotes voluntary disarmament to strengthen peace, security, and community development in Mindanao.
