The Hong Kong airport cancelled all remaining flights for Monday afternoon, Aug. 12, after thousands of pro-democracy protesters crowded the main terminal.

In the statement, the Hong Kong International Airport said the demonstration seriously disrupted the airport operations. All check-in services for departing flights had been suspended.

Mass protest calling for democratic reforms and an independent inquiry into police conduct has been hounding Hong Kong for the last two months.

Protestors demanded the resignation of the Chinese territory’s leader and an election for her successor.
