DAVAO CITY (March 1) -Major military escalation has unfolded in the Middle East following coordinated air strikes by the United States and Israel on multiple targets inside Iran on February 28, 2026 — an operation reportedly code-named Operation Lion’s Roar.

The development marks one of the most serious confrontations in the region in recent years, raising urgent international calls for restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement to prevent a wider war.

Joint U.S. and Israeli forces launched extensive air strikes targeting what were described as military installations and strategic infrastructure in Tehran and other Iranian cities.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed there are “many signs” suggesting that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei may have been killed during the attacks. As of this writing, Iranian authorities have not confirmed the claim.

Tehran condemned the strikes as a violation of international law and characterized the action as an act of aggression.

In response, Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israel and U.S. military installations across the Gulf region. Strikes or attempted strikes were reported near American bases in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.

Air defense systems in Israel were activated overnight as warning sirens sounded in multiple cities. Regional governments have heightened security protocols amid fears that the confrontation could expand beyond current flashpoints.

Iranian emergency services reported hundreds of casualties across several provinces following the air strikes. Iranian officials further alleged that a girls’ elementary school in Minab was struck during the hostilities, resulting in multiple student fatalities. Independent verification remains limited due to communication disruptions and restricted access in affected areas.

Humanitarian organizations warn that continued escalation could severely impact civilians, disrupt essential services, and displace communities already vulnerable from previous regional tensions.

The United Nations convened emergency consultations, with member states urging maximum restraint and immediate diplomatic dialogue. Several world leaders cautioned that further escalation risks destabilizing not only the Middle East but global security frameworks.

Russia condemned the strikes as “unprovoked aggression” and called for urgent de-escalation through diplomatic channels. European and Asian governments likewise appealed for calm and protection of civilians.

Global energy markets reacted swiftly. Crude oil prices climbed amid fears of potential disruption to shipping routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil supply.

Security alerts have also been heightened in major Western cities, including precautionary measures in New York and other metropolitan centers, following threat assessments tied to the escalating conflict.

As military movements continue and diplomatic efforts intensify, the world stands at a critical crossroads. Analysts warn that without swift de-escalation; the crisis could spiral into a broader regional conflict with far-reaching humanitarian and economic consequences.

Peace-loving citizens see the urgent need for dialogue, respect for international law, and the protection of innocent lives. In moments of global tension, the call for peace is not merely diplomatic language — it is a shared responsibility of nations.-Editha Z Caduaya
