DAVAO CITY –— The government will provide accommodation for medical frontliners who have been evicted from their rented homes or apartments as owners have turned wary over coronavirus disease (COVID-19) contamination.

In his talk to the nation on Monday night, President Rodrigo Duterte said he heard reports that medical frontliners are forced to leave their rented spaces, as owners are afraid to continuously accommodate them given the nature of their work and contacts with the COVID-19 patients.

To respond to this, Duterte asked the affected medical frontliners to report their condition to his office, as the government will find a way to accommodate them.

Should one report, Duterte has tasked Secretary Carlito Galvez to provide the necessary billeting near their workplaces with food provision included.

Though he appealed to the landlords and house owners not to discriminate and evict medical frontliners, Duterte stressed “We are trying to make up for the deficiencies. And luckily, the Philippines was able to at least meet halfway of the people’s expectations. Iyan sana. Maawa naman ako sa mga tao na tumutulong tapos pinapaalis. Hindi ho maganda pakinggan”.

The President said it is the government’s responsibility to help those at the frontlines in the fight against COVID-19, noting the government could shelter them in vacant hotels.-Newsline.ph
