DAVAO CITY — At approximately 3:03 PM, Mt. Kanlaon on Monday, November 9, Mt, Kanalaon, an active volcano located in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, erupted, producing a voluminous plume of ash and smoke.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert level from 2 to 3, indicating an increased likelihood of hazardous volcanic activity.

Defense Secretary and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) chairperson Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has activated the Inter-agency Coordinating Cell (IACC) to coordinate response efforts, emphasizing the necessity for in-person duty from member agencies at the NDRRM Operations Center starting Dec. 10.

The eruption prompted an immediate response from local government units (LGUs) and concerned agencies. Canlaon City Police Station (CPS) led evacuation operations for residents in affected areas, ensuring the safety of those living within the danger zone.

An emergency meeting was convened by the LGU, bringing together disaster response teams, health officials, and local authorities to strategize response measures.

Nearby communities were advised to remain vigilant and adhere to official directives, including evacuation orders and health precautions against volcanic ash.

PHIVOLCS warned of potential pyroclastic flows, ashfall, and further eruptions. Residents were urged to wear masks and stay indoors to avoid respiratory issues caused by volcanic ash. Livelihoods, particularly agriculture, are expected to be significantly impacted, with crops and livestock in nearby areas at risk.

This office remains in close coordination with Canlaon CPS and other agencies to monitor the situation and provide updates. Emergency relief efforts, including the establishment of evacuation centers and distribution of food and medical supplies, are underway.

Further developments and advisories will be issued as more information becomes available. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and heed all warnings to ensure their safety.
