DAVAO CITY – The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board, chaired by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., has approved a project aimed at improving transport infrastructure in Mindanao.

During its 21st meeting at Malacañan Palace in Manila on Wednesday, the NEDA Board endorsed the Mindanao Transport Connectivity Improvement Project (MTCIP) proposed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

“This is one of the main road programs for Mindanao. We should proceed with the project as soon as possible,” Marcos stated, according to a news release from the Presidential Communications Office.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan noted that the MTCIP aligns with the department’s goal of enhancing the transport network in Mindanao, benefiting the agricultural sector.

Bonoan added that the MTCIP is part of the master plan for the High-Standard Highway Network Development Project, which identifies major projects across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. “This project aims to provide high-quality traffic services, ensuring fast mobility and safe travel for vital socio-economic activities that support regional and national development,” he said.

Mindanao Development Authority Secretary Leo Mago emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “This marks the dawn of enhanced road connectivity and countryside development in Mindanao. We have long awaited these projects, which will benefit not only our generation but also future generations.”

The MTCIP is a comprehensive initiative to enhance road infrastructure along the Main Corridor, a crucial national highway network linking the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Davao, and General Santos. It is expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits for communities along the Main Corridor and beyond, improving access to markets, increasing trade opportunities, and enhancing connectivity for residents and businesses. This will provide a substantial boost to the overall economic growth and development of Mindanao.

The project aims to improve the transportation network in Mindanao, facilitate the movement of agricultural goods from remote areas, preserve the long-term value of road assets, and reduce expenses associated with routine and periodic maintenance. Additionally, it will interconnect the Northern Mindanao, Davao, and Soccsksargen regions.

Funded by the World Bank, the project comprises at least five components and is set for completion by 2030. The DPWH plans to continue its rural roads program beyond 2030, emphasizing the economic viability and benefits of these projects.
