MANILA (October 17) — More than 5,400 residents affected by the recent strong earthquakes in the Davao Region will receive emergency employment through the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the agency announced.

DOLE 11 Director Randolf Pensoy said 5,450 beneficiaries will be covered under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program, with over PHP 28 million allocated across the region.

Of the total, 4,950 workers will come from Davao Oriental — particularly Manay, the hardest-hit town — while the rest will come from Davao City, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental.

Beneficiaries will be deployed for debris clearing, waste management and other rehabilitation work under a 10-day emergency employment program that began Oct. 13.

Pensoy said the package includes micro-insurance coverage to ensure the safety of workers.

Two powerful quakes with magnitudes 7.6 and 6.8 struck Davao Oriental on Oct. 10, affecting over 70,000 families across the province.
