DAVAO CITY – Peace advocates in the Philippines and other nations believe that genuine peace can be achieved through a robust implementation of peace agreements. This is why the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) holds a significant role in the pursuit of lasting peace.

This was emphasized by former Dutch Foreign Minister and Chair of the P4P Foundation, Bert Koenders, during the launch of the Principles for Peace Southeast Asia campaign held in Davao City. The event was attended by peace advocates from Southeast Asia and Europe.

Koenders highlighted that the Principles for Peace campaign seeks to find sustainable solutions to conflicts and tensions, particularly in the Bangsamoro region, to ensure the continuity of peace. He mentioned three key elements in the approach: legitimacy, accountable security, and inclusive peace dividends. These require the collaboration of the government, academia, faith-based organizations, civil society, international non-governmental organizations, and peace advocates, each playing an important role in achieving the desired peace.

The BARMM is seen as a beacon of hope, with the Principles for Peace campaign aiming to fulfill the aspiration for genuine peace. It recognizes the importance of engaging all sectors, reducing tension, and ensuring effective implementation.

Koenders emphasized the significance of positive peace agreements and the need for momentum in reaping the peace dividends. He stressed that progress should be made in addressing difficult issues, which can provide hope for a better future.

Mohagher Iqbal, former Moro Islamic Liberation Front Peace Panel Chair and current Bangsamoro Minister of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education, acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead in achieving genuine peace. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining a strong commitment to the implementation of the peace agreement.

“There are challenges. We know that no matter how complete the peace agreement is, there will always be challenges in implementation. It requires the commitment, dedication, and creativity of both parties,” said Minister Iqbal.

With concerted efforts and unwavering commitment from all stakeholders, the goal of lasting peace in the Bangsamoro region can be realized.
