MANILA(May 5) — The Philippines and Japan are ramping up agricultural cooperation, zeroing in on climate-resilient farming, better market access, and a global stage for Filipino innovation.
Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya and Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. met Monday to map out the next phase of bilateral collaboration—one that leans heavily on sustainability and technology.
Japan reaffirmed its support for modernizing the Philippine farm sector, long a cornerstone of economic ties between the two countries.
“Both sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation… promoting sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices, and improving market access and trade,” the Japanese embassy said.
A key highlight of the talks: the Philippines’ participation in the Green Expo 2027 in Yokohama.
The global horticultural expo is expected to serve as a major platform for the country to showcase its advances in sustainable agriculture, alongside its rich biodiversity and farming heritage.
Tiu-Laurel welcomed Japan’s continued partnership, emphasizing that such collaborations are critical to boosting food security and uplifting rural communities.
The meeting signals a shift in PH-Japan agricultural ties—from traditional cooperation toward a more tech-driven, climate-conscious, and globally competitive farm sector.
