Residents rescue olive ridley sea turtle

DAVAO CITY –— Residents along the shoreline of Barangay Tag-ulo, Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte rescued an olive ridley sea turtle but was later released to the sea on January 18.

Aware that the sea mammal was an endangered, the residents informed the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) about the discovery who led them to release the mammal to the sea.

The presence of the turtle amazed the residents who took turns taking photos and videos while the mammal walked her freedom.

Dr. Adelaida Borja, the CENRO of of Piñan town and Engr. Ryan Carreon of CENRO Dapitan City examined the rescue sea turtle measuring 0.64 meters in length and 0.55 meters in width which weighs about 45 kilos.

After the examination, the turtle was immediately released back to the sea at Sunset Boulevard on the same day.

The environmental officer believed that the turtle went to the shore for nesting.

The CENRO officers put a tag to track the turtle.

The environment officials thanked the residents for their crucial role in taking care of the turtle and in taking care of the environment.

The olive ridley sea turtle is listed among the smallest of the world’s sea turtles.
