ZAMBOANGA CITY – The local tourism industry has recorded some PHP897.5 million losses due to the quarantine nationwide amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, an official said Saturday.

Sarita Sebastian, city tourism officer, said the losses were recorded since the community quarantine on March 20 this year.

Sebastian said the community quarantine that restricted the public’s movement has affected the transport services, ticketing agencies, travel and tours, accommodation facilities, food and beverages, recreational activities, as well as health and wellness facilities.

She noted that the Covid-19 pandemic began as the city government was promoting the 11 Islands as the newest tourist destination.

The 11 Islands, which have pristine beaches and beautiful diving sites, are located in the eastern part of this city and considered as this city’s banner tourism destinations.

The other local tourism sites include the historic Fort Pilar, Merloquet Falls, Pasonanca Tree House, Pasonanca Park, national museum, Paseo del Mar, Yakan Weaving Village, and Barter Trade Center.

Sebastian said the city government plans to open the Sta. Cruz Islands and 11 Islands to tourists once the city shifts to the new normal, although minimum health and safety protocols will still be implemented. -PNA
