DAVAO CITY  — The Philippine National Police on Saturday claimed that the crime rate in the country has dropped by 7.84 percent.

No less than Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. on Saturday announced the overall crime rate in the country has dropped significantly citing the January 1 to Sept. 15, 2023 record of the PNP.

During the weekly news forum at Camp Crame, the PNP statistics, according to Acorda, “we recorded 11,975 fewer incidents compared to the same period last year. This represents a 7.874-percent drop in the crime rate.

Compared to the same record last year, the PNP chief stated “From 152, 753 last year, now recorded 140,778,.”

He attributed the significant decrease to the PNP’s continuing efforts to combat crime and maintain peace and order as police become very visible in areas where public converged.

The record also showed that 54, 653 individuals were arrested including 56 wanted persons with rewards due to what he described as aggressive and honest law enforcement operations.

The government’s campaign against illegal drugs has also shown “remarkable progress,” noting the seizure of over PHP7.2 billion worth of illegal drugs during the conduct of 34,496 operations since the start of 2023, he claimed.

The PNP has conducted about 116,000 random and mandatory drug tests, as part of its integrity enhancement program.

The PNP’s campaign against loose firearms resulted in the recovery and surrender of 34,404 illegally possessed firearms.

From Jan. 1, 2022, to Aug. 30, 2023, the organization has resolved 4,082 cases involving PNP personnel while appropriate penalties and disciplinary actions, were also instituted, Acorda said.

The PNP chief lauded his personnel for their significant performance in maintaining peace and order in country saying “I want to express my deepest appreciation to the dedicated men and women of the Philippine National Police for their unwavering commitment to duty,” Acorda added.
