University of Southern Mindanao honors four outstanding alumni

COTABATO –– Four accomplished former students of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) were recognized as Outstanding Alumni of 2023 for their remarkable contributions to their respective fields since graduating from USM in Kabacan.

These four honorees have excelled in their chosen disciplines and made significant contributions to technology, science, and research at the national level.

Leading the awardees is Dr. Jose Lorenzo Gomos, a biosafety advocate and Southeast Asia Animal Health and Nutrition Consultant. Dr. Gomos, who graduated with honors in Veterinary Medicine in the eighties, has become an expert in agri-animal health, biotechnology, and nutrition. His research and efforts earned him recognition as an outstanding alumna for research.

Dr. Gomos has been a key figure in preventing the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Europe and Asia, working with a prominent company. During the awarding ceremony, he expressed his gratitude to the university’s administration for acknowledging his contributions to advancing veterinary and animal science education.

Next in line is Mabel Lynel Calungsod, an alumna recognized for her outstanding entrepreneurship. Calungsod, a Development Communication graduate, has established herself as a successful entrepreneur, contributing significantly to job creation, services, and economic support in the province.

Dr. Glady Pagunsan, an employee of DepEd Kidapawan City, was recognized for his contributions to education. He implemented various innovative projects to enhance learning, making his an effective educator.

Dr. Augusto Fuentes, who serves as the President of Davao Del Sur State College, was the first appointed president from USM. His initiatives earned him recognition as an outstanding alumna for extension services.

The USM President, Dr. Francisco Gil Garcia, expressed that these awardees serve as a testament to the quality of education the university provides. The selection process followed strict criteria set by the committee.

President Garcia believes that these outstanding alumni can serve as inspirations to current USM students and the province as a whole.

The USM administration is hopeful for future research and testing collaborations between Dr. Gomos’ Provita Company and the university, facilitated through a Memorandum of Understanding.

DSWD Regional Director Lloreto Cabaya, who attended the event, expressed support for the students from indigenous communities by allocating P5 million in assistance.
