Zamboanga City completes climate-resilient school buildings

ZAMBOANGA CITY–The city government has turned over two school buildings with climate change adaptability features worth PHP29.5 million in a coastal village here.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, who spearheaded the turnover of the two school buildings on Wednesday, said the project recipients are the elementary and secondary public schools in Barangay Cabaluay.

Salazar said each school building is a two-storey, eight-classroom edifice, and is the first of its kind in this city.

Both school buildings boast of structural designs that can withstand weather conditions resulting from climate change, having a rain collector for comfort room usage, higher elevation to prevent flood water from entering the classrooms, wider hallways, Persons with Disability (PWD) accessibility, and all rooms have breather ventilation space, among other features.

Records from the City Engineer’s Office showed that 20 similar school buildings are currently under construction in different barangays, most of which are in the final stages of completion.

Salazar said the construction of the school buildings is part of the local government’s thrust on education and climate change resiliency.-Bong Garcia/PNA
